I like the FAQ. On the positive side, I do now know what it’d feel
like to steal crisps from Gary Linekar.

you too.”

Parental anecdote

Whilst on their annual French countryside pilgrimage…
“We spent an hilarious evening with the loadsamunny Londoners,
Jacquie and Bob, on Monday night. They kept us in fits about Lauren
Booth’s mother, who apparently is a complete pisshead. The Booths
live next door to them, a few miles outside of Vergt. The old gal,
about the nearest thing Blair has to a mother-in-law, got stuck into
some red infuriater that Bob poured for her and sprayed it all over
their velour-covered chairs, sweeping aside all protests with high-
pitched promises of “I’ll buy a new fucking suite; just fill my
fucking glass.” Wouldn’t that go down nicely at Chequers when the
Bush’s are next in town?”

Helena Simms, Wife to the famous American nuclear scientist Harold Simms was killed by her husband after she had an affair with the neighbour. Over a period of 3 months Harold substituted Helena’s eye shadow with a Uranium composite that was highly radioactive, until she died of radiation poisoning. Although she suffered many symptoms, including total hair loss, skin welts, blindness, and extreme nausea and even had an ear lobe drop off, the victim never attended a doctor’s surgery or hospital for a check up.

NSS and no2id

Filed under: General — richard @ 12:15 pm

Righty-oh, this might backfire horribly, but what the heck. I run the
list, and as I said to somebody yesterday (or was it Tony Blair/Bush/
Putin/Chinese premier/? OK, delusions of
grandeur aside, the point still remains): what’s the point of having
the power if you don’t abuse it once in a while.
There’s a fair number of folk who get a bit worked up about a few
things, politically or religiously or freedom related.
So rather than us all politely stepping around each others
sensibilities, how about we embrace that for a while. How about folk
send out details on campaigns they think others on the list (or
readers of the website, which slowly grows) might be interested in
being aware of, involved in, or a member of…
Anyway, here’s some bumf on:
The National Secular Society
- Campaigning to reduce the influence of religion in public life and
education
No2id
- Renew your passport next month for freedom; Campaigning against
national ID cards/databases
Regards,
Richard.

National Secular Society
Those of us who value reason, are becoming alarmed about the
increasingly extreme religious influence in our government, our
lawmakers, and our public institutions - especially in our education
system. Many people, while standing up for freedom of religion, and
freedom not to believe, feel that the proper place for religion is in
the place of worship or home. They see the danger of religion
becoming too politically ambitious.
The NSS is a rallying point for opposition to this religious
resurgence. We must convince our politicians and public servants - as
well as our friends, neighbours and colleagues - that our
institutions and public life should be secular. A secular state
should guarantee freedom of conscience, but eliminate religious
privilege.
The only way to prevent the kind of religious power seeking that
leads to conflict is to make both religious discrimination and
religious privilege constitutionally impossible.
We need a secular constitution that will:
* End the privileged input of religious bodies to policy making and
law-making
* Keep all public services free from religious control so that that
they remain equally available to all on the same terms
* Abolish the established church and all its privileges (including 26
bishops in the House of Lords)
* Put an end to the divisiveness of publicly funded religious schools
by making them open to all without discrimination on grounds of
religion, or lack of it, and bringing them under local authority control
* Abolish blasphemy and similar repressive laws, rather than extend them
Religious influence in Government has not been higher in living
memory. The rise of fundamentalist religion of all shades has the
potential to seriously erode hard-won freedoms.
Individually, we can only look on with mounting fear, but working
together, we can make a difference. Join the fight for a truly
secular society and join the National Secular Society today.

No2ID (via the Glasgow group):
Describing the link between compulsory ID cards and passports
(”designated documents”), the Home Secretary said on 21st March:
“… anyone who feels strongly enough about the linkage not to want to
be issued with an ID card in the initial phase will be free to surrender
their existing passport and apply for a new passport before the
designation order takes effect.”
Many people intend to do just that, while also taking advantage of the
current £51 renewal fee which is certain to rise considerably as soon as
the UK Identity and Passport Service’s new procedures are in place.
NO2ID have now launched a new campaign to orchestrate a mass renewal of
passports in May. The campaign website is at:
www.renewforfreedom.org
I would strongly urge anyone who has not recently renewed their passport
to participate in this campaign.
