running the numbers
a little art for a friday morning:
www.chrisjordan.com/current_set2.php?id=7
#quote#
This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the
austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity
of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of
paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption)
and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might
have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find
daily in articles and books. Statistics tend to feel abstract and
anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning
of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million
Americans in prison, or $12.5 million spent every hour on the Iraq
war. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures
of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from
thousands of smaller photographs.

you might get a kick out of my latest portrait – it’s someone we all

[labhumour] Music recommendations?
I’m listening to these bands at the moment:
Four Day Hombre – My Fave at the moment. Can’t stop playing it! Try
“inertia” if you can find it.
Mulatu Astatke – Full of Ethiopian goodness
Spank Rock – Bit noisy but tight as a nun
The Noisettes – Morcheeba with rock guitars. Mmmmm!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Know nothing about them ‘cept how cool
they sound.
If you’re tired of your iPod’s offerings, you can also try http://
www.sideload.com which offers thousands of tracks to download for
free. Bit of a luck dip but well worth the effort of getting saw dust
up your sleeve.
Happy listening!

Anybody got any suggestions for music, artists, albums to check out?
To get the ball rolling, a few new(ish) ones on my playlists…
* The Decemberists – The Crane Wife (recommended by Adam as it
happens). Saw them live on Sunday, and they were very good.
* Joanna Newsom – Ys is taking some time to exite me, but The Milk-
